Surely you have heard about the 75th Tony Awards that occurred last night, Hosted on Broadway by MC-and-recent Academy Award-winner Ariana DeBose. Well, this brief social media reflection shall not only point out certain zingers, but also alert the general public about why last night’s award show worked a lot better than this past year’s Academy Awards, that all but destroyed what was left of the “smack heard ’round the world”.
I felt viewing the Broadway honorees – not to mention this year’s Grammies as well a few months back (hosted by Trevor Noah) – each did a much better job of celebrating the genius of Stephen Sondheim.
Now, the fun begins. First, IYKYK – there was a recent incident at Company in which 3-time Tony-winning Patti LuPone verbally chastised a patron for not properly wearing a mask over both their nose and mouth, and said person claimed in retort to be paying their salary. Nope, that was absolutely the wrong answer….! The world learned who was right away:
So, it ultimately was all about covid safety. Then, we all earned of a new EGOT winner via one of the Producers of A Strange Loop – Singer/Actress Jennifer Hudson:
Back to DeBose – she was fabulous herself in pointing out the diversity about to be regarded yesterday, that had come a long way in Broadway’s 75 years of its own history, even including first-time nonbinary acting nominees and first-time nonbinary music winners.
Lastly, of course, there are still reasons to stay strong – it was true in times of Harvey Milk and it’s even more true now.
