Well then! If you haven’t heard about “the smack heard ’round the world,” my guess is you’re probably Rip Van Winkle. This horrific event that occurred at this past Sunday’s Academy Awards overshadowed the event itself, although it did draw in higher ratings, for better or worse. We’ll get to that in a moment. First, let us recognize that CODA won Best Picture in a tiny sweep of 3 for 3!
And now, comes the moment that occurred: the Smith-Rock smack.
What was a historical rarity was how The Power of the Dog‘s single directorial win had only happened twice before: in 1967 for The Graduate, and 1937 for The Awful Truth.
In the coming days and weeks ahead, the Academy’s Board of Directors will be taking the appropriate steps to review how to proceed with their next steps in this matter:
Very good the SLJ got to win here, even though it didn’t make it to air! Crazy what did and did not show up on TV this year…
Believe I’ve seen 19 pictures thus far nominated/winning, but not CODA. Maybe this is how I will get to!
I still revel in how great Blade Runner 2049 was – another of Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi masterpieces.
