Sooo! At this point, you [hopefully] didn’t miss any of the news that Chlóe Zhao is on point to become the second female and first Asian woman ever to potentially win the Best Directing Academy Award in its nearly-93-year history. Here is DGA link:

Now, Best Actress is the biggest lottery in years! Seriously. Andra Day won at the Globes, Carey Mulligan won at Critics’ Choice, Viola Davis won at SAGs and Frances McDormand won at BAFTAs!! It may just seem appropriate for Kirby to win by default. Could even get another tie winner — first time since Streisand and Hepburn.
Of course, if anyone can get to be the oddball “indie favorite” for selections, there are two I have: Emile Mosseri, for Best Original Score — MINARI; and the film WOLFWALKERS for Best Animated Feature. SOUL may be good as well — I really think Pixar manages to have an endless budget, still want to see this.
Difficult decisions meanwhile are being made by big names such as Will Smith, who are taking their business outside the state of Georgia — keep an eye on this:
